53rd Pa. Infantry
Regiment raised in 1861 in Montgomery (Cos. A & B), Chester, Blair, Huntingdon, Centre, Clearfield, Carbon, Union, Luzerne, Potter, Northumberland, Juniata, and Westmoreland Counties. Joined Army of the Potomac (II Corps). Involved in 27 combat engagements including Fair Oaks, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania. Motto: "We Might As Well Die Here." 394 of its enlisted men and officers died of injury or illness. 22 died at Andersonville and 7 at Florence. Regiment mustered out June 30, 1865. 2 of its men passed through Camp Discharge.
