56th Pa. Infantry
Recruited in 1862 from Philadelphia, Indiana, Luzerne, Northumberland, Centre, Susquehanna, Schuylkill and Wayne Counties. Part of Army of Virginia, then Army of the Potomac (I Corps, V Corps). Took part in 22 combat engagements including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Five Forks. Lost 215 enlisted men and officers from injury or illness. 3 men died at Andersonville. Regiment took part in Grand Review in D.C., then mustered out July 1, 1865, in Philadelphia. 3 of its men passed through Camp Discharge.
