Volunteer: Help Preserve Our Past for the Future

The Lower Merion Historical Society could not exist without the volunteers who give their time and energy to support our collections and programs. LMHS relies on volunteers to perform many essential functions that help us preserve and share our community’s history, like transcription, data entry, research, scanning, photography, and more.

Even with a few hours, you can make a significant contribution to preserving our local history.

Volunteer? What’s in it for me?

A lot, if you’re interested in history and community!

  • Get in touch with primary sources Nothing quite matches the experience of examining documents and objects created long ago in a world at once familiar and foreign.
  • Get to know our unique collection For three-quarters of a century we’ve collected and preserved an unmatched archive of books, photos, maps, and artifacts that tell our story. And continue to do so…
  • Discover your own past Who lived in my house? What was life like for my family?
  • Work with great people Meet neighbors and new friends with shared interests.
  • Build community Preserving our relics and sharing our stories helps bind us together in a common cultural experience.

Made Possible by Volunteers

…the most popular and important sections of our website, among them:

  • Joseph Price’s Diary “During this project I became so close to Price and his world that, at the end, I felt I lost a personal friend.” —Mary Keim, who transcribed the 18th-19th century diary of a prominent local citizen.
  • The Russell Byerley Memorial World War II Collection Farilyn Leopold organized and cataloged letters and photos sent home by our World War II troops so that you could look them up online.
  • The First 300 54 local experts researched or wrote chapters for the definitive account of our community’s history.
  • The Roberts Family Collection Ann Bagely sorted and listed the letters, documents, deeds, books and maps of one of Lower Merion’s founding families.

Our Volunteer Hall of Fame

The greatest gift you can give is your time and talent. These 250+ individuals include several husbands and wives, as well as parents and children. During the past 20 years, they have generously given their time and talent to serve the Township of Lower Merion and the Borough of Narberth. Won’t you join them?

Thank you, volunteers!
