The Merionite Vol. I No. I, 1928-29

Lower Merion High School’s student-produced, faculty-sponsored newspaper debuted as a quarterly booklet in 1928, and quickly increased to publishing almost weekly in a newspaper format, including April Fools (discontinued after 2008) and June “Matriculation” editions. Early issues ran 4 pages in length, and in the 1950s expanded to 20 or 24 pages.

Its content consists of high-school-related news, humor, opinion, sports and creative writing, plus paid advertising. It is distributed free to the student body. Over the years, The Merionite has won many awards for excellence in high school journalism.

The Lower Merion Historical Society’s archive is incomplete and some have missing pages. Many are photocopies, made from the school’s collection while it was in storage during a building renovation. Lower Merion High School maintains its own (incomplete) archive, and is in the process of making available online access to past issues of The Merionite.
