Regiment recruited in 1861 solely in Philadelphia. Part of the Army of the Potomac (III Corps, then II Corps). Involved in 17 combat engagements including Seven Days, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania. 222 of its enlisted men and officers died from injuries or illness. 13 men died at Andersonville. Regiment mustered out in June 1864. 12 of its men went through Camp Discharge; 4 had been POWs, including 1 known Andersonville survivor.
