23rd Pa. Infantry

Regiment, also known as 'Birney's Zouaves,' recruited men in Philadelphia. Became part of the Army of the Potomac (first IV Corps, then VI Corps). Involved in 8 combat engagements including Fair Oaks, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg. 170 enlisted men and 8 officers dead in battle or disease. 4 of its men died at Andersonville. Regiment mustered out September 1864. 11 of its men went through Camp Discharge, including 5 Andersonville survivors.
