Abstract: Dated April 1, 1837; Columbia & Philadelphia Railway was the first railroad chartered in Pennsylvania and ran an 82 mile line from Philadelphia through Lancaster to Columbia, Pa. as part of the “Main Line of Public Works of the State of Pennsylvania”; the “Main Line” as a name for the Lower Merion area derived from this early railroad
